Who uses 0800 numbers
Banks, energy suppliers, councils, charities and all sorts of businesses use 0800 numbers for customer service, sales and helplines. The organisation that holds the number pays for your call, which is the point of it: nobody should be put off calling because of the cost.
What an 0800 call costs
Nothing, from a UK landline or a UK mobile. Calls to 0800 and 0808 numbers have been free from every UK phone since 1 July 2015. Before then, mobile networks could charge for them. If you are calling from abroad, check with your provider first.
Do scammers use 0800 numbers?
Many organisations show their 0800 number when they ring you, so an 0800 number on your screen can be genuine. Caller ID can also be faked, and scammers copy the numbers of banks and other trusted names for exactly that reason. The number alone does not prove who is calling.
If a caller says they are from your bank, hang up and call the number on the back of your card, or dial 159 for most UK banks. Never give a code sent by text, a password or card details to someone who called you. Look the number up to see what other people have reported, and add your own report if the call was a scam.
