How to find out who called you.
Get the number from 1471 or your phone’s call log, then look it up here to see what other people reported about it and where its range was issued. It’s all free, with no login and no pop-ups.
After a missed call
Five free ways to find out who rang.
Dial 1471 (landlines)
On a landline, dial 1471 to hear the number of the last caller. BT says checking is free; pressing 3 to ring back costs 35p plus the call. It cannot give you a number the caller withheld. Other providers set their own charges.
Check your phone’s call log
On a mobile, the number is already in your recent calls: Recents in the iPhone Phone app, Call history in the Google Phone app on Android (tap More). Other Android makes use similar names. Copy the number from there rather than typing it from memory.
Look the number up
Paste it into the box above. You see what other people reported about calls from it and which phone company its range was given to. The free number lookup sets out exactly what a lookup can and can’t show. The first digits help too: an 01 or 02 area code is where a landline was issued (not where the caller is), 0330 and 0333 numbers are UK-wide, and 07 numbers are mobiles.
If it said Withheld, Private or No caller ID
There is no number to look up, and 1471 won’t give it to you. What you can do is stop these calls reaching you, and report the ones that break the rules. Withheld and No caller ID calls explains how.
If they texted instead
Look the number up the same way. If the text looks like a scam, forward it to 7726, which is free. Who texted me? covers the signs of a scam text.
Should you ring back?
- Don’t trust the number on screen. Caller ID can be faked, so a call showing your bank’s number may not be your bank. How spoofing works.
- Don’t ring back blind. A single ring then nothing is sometimes a dialler that gave up, and sometimes bait to make you ring a costly number. Silent and one-ring calls explains why.
- Bank, HMRC or police? Hang up and use a number you trust, from your card, a letter or the organisation’s own website, or dial 159 for most UK banks.

How can I find out who called me for free?
Dial 1471 on a landline to hear the last number that called (free to check on BT). On a mobile, copy the number from your recent calls. Then paste it into the free lookup here to see what other people reported about it and which phone company its range was given to. We never name a private person.
Who rang me? Can I find out for free?
Yes, in most cases: the number from 1471 or your call log, what other people reported about it, and what kind of number it is. The one step here that costs money is ringing back through 1471, which BT charges at 35p plus the call.
Can I find out who called from a withheld number?
Usually not. 1471 will tell you the caller withheld their number but will not give it to you, and with no number there is nothing to look up. Our guide to withheld and No caller ID calls explains how to stop them.
Who just called me from a number I don't know?
Look the number up. If nobody has reported it, that does not make it safe: the number may be new, or the caller ID may be faked.
Can you find out the name of the person who called?
Not if it is a private person. No legitimate free UK service gives out the name behind a personal number, and GotMyNumber never shows one. You can see what other people reported and which network the range belongs to.
Is the lookup free?
Yes. Searching a number and reading reports costs nothing and needs no login. There are no pop-ups.
Should I call an unknown number back?
Check it first. Do not ring back an unexpected international or premium rate number, and never call a number a caller gave you to prove who they are. If the call claimed to be your bank, hang up and call 159 instead.
How accurate are the reports?
Reports are what people say happened when they got a call from the number. We count each person once and show every report with its date. They are accounts, not proof, and we present them that way.
Can I report a scam or nuisance number?
Yes. Report it here so the next person who looks it up is warned. If it was fraud, report it to Report Fraud as well, or to Police Scotland on 101.
A number that is mine is being reported. What can I do?
When claiming opens, you will be able to claim the number so people who look it up see it is yours. If a report about your number is wrong now, email privacy@gotmynumber.co.uk and we will review it.
