Scam number check

Is this number a scam?

Check it here. A lookup shows what other people reported about a number and whether its range is real. It can’t prove a number is safe, and a report is somebody’s account of a call, not a verdict.

Free, no login, no pop-ups. Below: numbers reported from more than one network, and the signs of a scam call.

Numbers reported by more than one person

Each one was reported by people on at least two different networks, an hour or more apart. The colour follows how many separate people reported it, nothing else — we do not score numbers, and the words are theirs, not ours. Personal mobile numbers are never listed here.

Why we count independent sources rather than reports: ten reports from one person do not list a number, but three reports from three different people do.

What a check can tell you

  • What people reported. Each report with its type and date, and how many different people reported the number, counted once each.
  • Who the range belongs to. Which phone company Ofcom gave the number’s range to, and when. Numbers move between networks, so this is where the number started.
  • Whether the range is real. A number in a range Ofcom never allocated cannot be a working line, so a call showing one almost certainly used a faked caller ID.
  • What it will never tell you. A private person’s name, or that a number is safe.

More on each answer: the phone number checker (is the number real, and what will ringing back cost?) and the free number lookup (what a number can and can’t say about who holds it).

What a report proves, and what it does not

A report is an allegation

Anyone can submit one, and we do not ask them to prove it. Several independent people reporting the same number is meaningful. One person reporting it many times is not, which is why we count sources rather than reports.

No reports does not mean safe

We only know what people tell us, and a number first used this morning has no history at all. An empty record means we have not been told anything. It is not a clean bill of health.

Numbers change hands

UK mobile numbers are recycled after a period of disconnection. A number reported two years ago may belong to somebody entirely innocent today, which is why every report here shows the date it was made. Read an old report with that in mind.

The number may not be real

Caller ID can be forged. A scammer can display a bank’s real switchboard number, or one matching your own area code. Reporting the number you saw is still worth doing, but it may not be the number they were calling from.

Caller ID spoofing: the number shown on your phone can be forged, so a local-looking number does not prove where the call came from.

How to tell a scam call from a nuisance one

A nuisance call wastes your time. A scam call is trying to take something from you. These are the tells that matter, in the order they usually show up.

A comparison of telemarketing, spam and scam calls, showing what each one wants from you and what to do about it.

They create urgency

Your account will be closed today. Your parcel is held. Press 1 now. A real bank, HMRC or courier is content for you to hang up and call them back.

They ask you to move money

No bank will ever ask you to move money to a safe account. That sentence is, on its own, proof of a scam.

They already know a little about you

A name and a postcode are cheap. Knowing them proves nothing about who is calling.

The number looks local

Caller ID is trivial to fake. A number matching your own area code is a sales technique, not a guarantee.

They will not let you verify

Hang up, wait a minute, and ring the number printed on your card or the organisation's website. A genuine caller expects this.

For blocking, the TPS register and what actually reduces the volume, see how to stop spam calls in the UK. To find out where a number is from, try the UK area code list.

Where to report a scam call in the UK

Reporting a number here warns the next person who looks it up. It does not reach the authorities, so please also use the right official route.

Report Fraud

England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Report fraud and attempted fraud, whether or not you lost money, online or on 0300 123 2040. It replaced Action Fraud in December 2025.

Police Scotland

In Scotland, report fraud to Police Scotland on 101.

Forward the text to 7726

Free on every UK network. It spells SPAM on a keypad and goes to your operator's abuse team.

Telephone Preference Service

Free register that makes unsolicited live marketing calls unlawful. It does not stop scammers, who were never obeying the law.

Questions people ask

How do I check if a number is a scam?

Put the full number into the checker on this page. You see what other people reported about it, which phone company its range was given to, and whether the range was ever allocated at all. If the caller said they were your bank, hang up and dial 159.

Is there a free scammer phone number lookup?

Yes, this one. Checking a UK number here is free, needs no login and shows no pop-ups. It shows what people reported; it never names a private person.

If a number has no reports, is it safe?

No. It may be a new number, or the caller ID may have been faked. No reports means nobody has told us about it, not that it is safe.

Is this number genuine?

The checker shows whether Ofcom ever allocated the number's range to a phone company. A number in a range that was never allocated cannot be a working line, so a call showing one almost certainly used a faked caller ID.

What should I do if I think a call was a scam?

Hang up, and don't ring back on a number the caller gave you. Report it to Report Fraud, or Police Scotland on 101, text the number to 7726, and report it here so the next person who looks it up is warned.

If it is your number being reported

Legitimate businesses can be reported by mistake, for example when they call from a number nobody recognises. The fix is to stop being unknown.
